A shooting at a Colorado high school left two students hospitalized and a teenage gunman dead, USA Today reports.

On Wednesday (September 10), Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a shooting at around 12:24 p.m. at Evergreen High School, located roughly 30 miles southwest of Denver.

The suspected shooter, who was a male student armed with a handgun, opened fire both inside and outside the school building, Jacki Kelley, a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, said in a statement.

The teenage gunman died from self-inflicted injuries after being taken to the hospital. His name hasn't been released.

“It does not appear that any officers fired any rounds,” Kelley said during a news briefing.

Two students were also injured in the shooting and taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. Dr. Brian Blackwood, head of trauma, said one student is in critical condition and the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Their names have also not been released.

Officials haven't determined a motive for the shooting. It's unclear whether the shooter knew the victims.

“We’re still investigating what led up to the shooting,” Kelley said.

Evergreen High School is located just 20 miles from Columbine High School, where a mass shooting in 1999 killed 12 students and a teacher. Governor Jared Polis said he's monitoring the situation closely, and state troopers are assisting local authorities with the investigation.
