The US House of Representatives has voted to impeach Donald Trump for a second time.

Congress moved forward with the impeaching of Trump a week after his supporters carried out a deadly attack at the US Capitol on January 6.

The House reached 217 votes around 4:23 p.m. ET, securing enough votes to formally impeach Trump for a second time. Ten Republicans voted in favor of impeaching the president. In total, 232 votes were cast in favor of Trump's impeachment to 197 against. Five representatives did not vote.

He is now the first president in American history to be impeached twice.

The single article of impeachment, which specifically cited “incitement of insurrection,” was debated on the House floor Wednesday afternoon (January 13). It states: “President Trump gravely endangered the security of the United State and its institutions of Government. He threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of Government. He thereby betrayed his trust as President, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.”

After nearly three and a half hours of debate, House representatives began casting their votes just after 3:00 p.m. ET. During the debate, seven House Republicans vowed to vote in favor of impeaching Trump.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will now give the impeachment resolution to the US Senate where a trial will take place. The Senate though is adjourned until January 19, and since current Majority Leader Mitch McConnell recently stated that all 100 senators would have to agree to come back early to handle business, Trump’s impeachment trial won't be able to start until January 20 at 1 p.m. after Joe Biden is inaugurated, per a report by The Hill.
